Getting Involved

Looking for a meaningful and easy internship this summer or even right now? Below are a number of internships available with the Student at Large team. Although we have set expectations, we are more than willing to work with you to create a place that adapts to your personal interests AND our current needs. There are always ways for you to get involved and because we are an internet-based company with employees and interns spread around the globe, all you need is a laptop and internet!

If you are interested in any of the positions listed below, just send us an e-mail to contact@studentatlarge.net with your  name, age, location, the positions you are interested in, and your availability and we'll get back to you to set up an interview.

Editing

Position Description:
One of the most basic yet most crucial jobs to the success of Student at Large, editing entails just that - editing pieces that are submitted every month. Each month we receive anywhere from 4-12 written pieces, all of which take only a few minutes to edit. Thus, for maybe an hour of your time each month you can have an internship AND really help us out.

Expectations:
  • Edit incoming poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and music reviews each month
  • For creative pieces, contact author to clarify grammatical errors (e.g. did they do it on purpose?)
  • Edit and send final copies to Web Master in a timely fashion

Marketing

Picture
Position Description:
Marketing covers a variety of tasks, but essentially we need people to think of and implement great ways to advertise Student at Large around the world. Ideally, an entire "team" would work under this job to ensure that Student at Large reaches as wide an audience as possible while working within our extremely limited budget and eventually branch out into acquiring advertising for the website itself.

Expectations:
As mentioned above, marketing would ideally fall to a number of people. Below are our general expectations, but this internship can be tailored to your specific interests and abilities:
  • Create advertisements to use across Social Media, coordinating with our Social Media team
  • Create and implement advertising for Student at Large

Recruiting

Position Description:
Recruiting is by far the most important and ubiquitous job at Student at Large. Without people submitting awesome stuff every month, there is no Student at Large, but we can each only do so much. While much of Student at Large's submissions come by way of Facebook blasts and word of mouth, we are looking to branch out and be more proactive about finding new submissions.

Expectations:
  • Work closely with Submissions intern to see where biggest submissions are coming from (specific areas, what ads worked, etc.)
  • Actively recruit at events near you (ex. art expositions, music festivals, etc.)
  • Send out at least 15 personalized e-mails per month to artists, writers, etc. (can be found all over the web or even people you might know!)

Submissions

Position Description:
The submissions intern is responsible for organizing the Student at Large submissions inbox each month, keeping track of monthly submission forms, forwarding written pieces to editors, and following up on any problems/complications with files people submit.

Expectations:
  • Organize submissions by monthly folder and check Spam folder to make sure nothing slips through
  • Forward written pieces to Editor
  • Compile biographies and other necessary information
  • Follow-up any problems/complications with submissions

Social Media

Position Description:
Social media entails keeping Twitter and Facebook accurate and up-to-date and working with Recruiters and Marketing to ensure that social media is used to the best of its ability to promote Student at Large.

Expectations:
  • Bi-monthly Facebook updates
  • Weekly Tweets on Twitter
  • Work with Recruiting and Marketing to help best meet their needs

Web Manager

Picture
Position Description:
Web manager(s) help with the basics of putting the website together each month. At this point, it is really just a matter of going back and doing all the work we've skipped over the school year. For example, working to fix the Wallpaper section, adding "back to menu" buttons, and other simple tasks.

Expectations
  • Work with the Web Master to meet current needs on www.studentatlarge.net in a timely manner
