Review by David Manville
Matter in Motion is an amazing blend of folk music and artistic harmonies created by the one and only Zach Ward. Ward has been “Pushing hard to get an EP out by winter break” (January 2011). Matter in Motion is mainly influenced by bands such as Mew and Opeth. Ward says he enjoys the “Journey into a dark progressive style of music.” After getting frustrated with other musicians, Ward paved his own path creating a much deeper, passionate sound for tunes such as “Those Eyes” and “Our Sonic Souls”. Ward says he is inspired by the bass techniques of Victor Wooten and enjoys translating them onto guitar.
The song “Those Eyes” by Matter in Motion is a melodic blend of ambient guitar, poetry, and impressive harmonies. Ward uses a wide variety of mediums to send out a very relaxed feeling of bliss. The lyrics speak more like a poem than a song. In the song “Those Eyes”, Ward uses short poetic phrases to capture the essence of a beautiful woman’s eyes. The creative use of violin, sound bites, and simple percussion give the song great artistic value that complements the poetic word of Matter in Motion.
The song “Our Sonic Souls” by Matter in Motion is another great example of Ward’s ability to combine the art of poetry with folk music. The song opens with fast percussive guitar playing that gives the song a very sturdy rhythmic feel. Ward uses a wide range of dynamics that take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride through a story about life, love, and hard times. Ward uses astonishing imagery and leaves you with an ending that keeps you guessing. This is the perfect song to relax and listen to after a long hard day of work.
Zach Ward is “Matter in Motion” and there is definitely much more to come. Look out for Matter in Motion’s new EP coming January 2011. Also look out for these two new hot releases.
